Lohi's
Surf Guide
C'mon, say it quick three times: "Lohifushi, Lohifushi, Lohifushi." Ack! No surprise this high-performance lefthander was shortened to simply Lohi's. Swells pinwheel in around the island and wrap into the little bay with about three sections: the takeoff is into a long, sweeping wall which starts to bend at you a bit and tube as it comes around the corner; the inside section is thin lipped and fast and ends in a wide, shallow reef field close to the island. So close in fact, that at high tide, swells wash in over the pathway, and mini jetties have been built to prevent erosion -- let's hope they don't get bigger and start affecting the surf. Hudhuranfushi Island Resort (formerly known as Lohifushi) has exclusive access to this wave. Lohi's also acted as home base for the O'Neill Deep Blue Open. In June '03, the event was won by Trent Munro, who said, "this is the second best performance wave (after Lowers) we've ever had for a pro surf contest." It's that fun. Sadly, big wave surfer Jay Moriarity drowned in the channel here while free diving in 2001.
