La Punta

Surf Guide

So you've come to Playa Zicatela with the most heroic intentions. But. It's 20-feet, top-to-bottom, and you just saw Greg and Rusty Long stretching on the beach with 10'0"s by their sides. Best to look elsewhere today. If you're a surfer in the intermediate range, look no farther than La Punta, located at the far south headland of Playa Zicatela. The headland does a good job of absorbing and refracting raw swell energy (which helps the chargers up the beach), making for a ridiculously fun left-hand pointbreak that pumps out barrel sections, ramps, steep walls and crisp shoulders with every wave. The water is pretty much always a deep turquoise and bathwater warm, and the beach a great place to hang out. Plus, when Zicatela blows out, La Punta will handle the wind far better and all day long. A heads-up though: La Punta is hardly a secret. After all, you're not the only guy or gal who decided to pass up on maxing Zicatela for your health's sake. Surfing is a multi-generational hobby in these parts of Mexico, thus the local crew is thick, territorial and very talented. So mind your etiquette out there.
