Thunders
Surf Guide
Thunders is left-hander that bends around a broad reef just off of an idyllic looking, but malaria ridden, little island on the southern end of the Mentawai chain. The reef is more exposed and thus more consistent than any of its well-known cousins. Yet its exposure may be its pitfall too--as it provides one of the larger fields of play in the area with shifty, hard to read peaks and running, sometimes sectioning, walls. Add to this a current that tends to drag one into the reef and the combination makes for more than the casual boat observer bargains for. Thunders can handle more swell than many other area breaks, however, and slightly bigger boards make some of the aforementioned traits more manageable. Other celebrated waves exist nearby, and when the more northern breaks are flat, several boats will converge at Thunders.
