La Bocana
Surf Guide
Though El Salvador is typically known as a mecca for regular-footers because of the abundance of right points, La Bocana is the Libertad area's only genuine left-hander. Located on the south end of the little village of El Tunco, like its neighbor Zunzal, Bocana is a swell magnate and will almost always have something to offer. The only difference is that Bocana is far more punchier and difficult to maneuver than Zunzal, making it a favorite of the local kids who, quite frankly, rip these days. As such, the local vibe is significantly more intense here, and respect for those who count Bocana as their backyard is essential. Bocana is the result of an open, cobblestone-lined river mouth. After periods of heavy rain, the river will spew out all manner of debris, from trees to dead dogs to the brownest water you can imagine. The force of the river shifts silt, sand and cobbles north and south of the mouth frequently, which causes slight changes in the characteristics of the surrounding peaks. But the left in front of the river is unchanged -- a steep drop, a couple good sections and a dredging inside barrel section. As mentioned in the Zunzal spot description, the village of El Tunco has transformed from a rough backwater to a trendy vacation spot for locals and travelers alike, which is laid back during the week and absolutely pulsing on the weekends. And with a choice between mellow or heavy in Zunzal and Bocana, it's easy to see how this place has become such a hot spot for traveling surfers. Definitely worth a visit if you're exploring El Salvador.
